Humans are the dominant species in the Galaxy so far. They are as diverse as can be, with many genetically modified off-shoots.
Baseline Human is a catch-all term for non-modified humans. This is not strictly true, as modern humans live long, healthy lives thanks to a concerted effort in the mid-21st century to eradicate genetic disease.
Nowadays, gene therapy and cosmetic surgery is commonplace throughout human space. It is responsible largely for the extension in an average humans lifespan, with many not even considering it abnormal.
However, a more recent counter culture has developed through the use of self-modifiction. Altering a living human at the genetic level is an extremely difficult task, requiring therapy and extensive medical care. This has not stopped a large number of 'backstreet gene clinics' operating away from the eyes of the government. While stories of horrific accidents have dissuaded many, an equal amount have undergone procedures, becoming what modern humans call Boosters.
Vat-Grown Humans are an extremely common sight across human space, making up a large part of human make-up. 'Vatties' suffer serious mental and physical defects if grown to adulthood, and as such have traditionally been a means of providing children to those unable. The majority are largely unchanged from baseline human genetic structures. With recent advances in cloning technology, the idea of a gene-modified mass produced human has become a public issue, with corporations operating in an ethically grey field.
In the 2260s, pioneered by research conducted on planets such as @[Lorriman](location:9931619e-5c1a-4b6d-8f97-3f71e33ff3b4) and Ceti Epsilon allowed for the first genetically specific children to be born in labs. Corporations in Sol Space subsequently petitioned for the relaxation of harsh genetic testing laws, leading to the first GM Vat-Growns being made en-mass in the mid 70s. Restrictions still applied to the 'flash-cloning' of adult humans, so most genetic testing had to be conducted on regular adult humans, the results of these experiments leading to the creation of the 'Boosters', GM humans. By the 2280s, the practice of designer children was introduce to the SCG, where it has become common practice amongst the elites of Luna.
The average Vat-Grown Human is typically paler than normal, with no appendix, and a resistance to genetic disease. While it is theorised that modern Vat-Growns are immune to alzheimers and other mental disabilities, those with these traits are are in their early 40s at most, so large scale study has not yet been possible.
Outside of Sol Space, such as in the GCC, Vat-Grown technology has started to influence much of modern life. Corporations in the GCC are permitted to grow large numbers of vat-growns for labor, a practice decried as slavery by parts of the SCG. Rumors of an underground railroad made to smuggle these vat-growns into Sol Space have circulated for many years since the Gaia Conflict, mostly by the GCC propaganda machine, but the SCG continue to deny the existence of such a thing.
Similarly, stories exist of adult vat-growns being produced in uncharted space, but no such confirmed reports exist.
while others, bearing more human-sounding names, are created for and raised as members of regular human families. Still others are the lab-created designer progeny of the SCG's rich elite. Vat-grown humans tend to be paler than baseline, though those with darker skin better display the dull, greenish hue resulting from their artificial growth. Vat-grown humans have no appendix and fewer inherited genetic disabilities but have a weakened metabolism.
With cloning on the forefront of human scientific advancement, cheap mass production of bodies is a very real and rather ethically grey industry. Although slavery, indentured servitude and flash-cloning are all illegal in SCG space, there still exists a margin for those legitimate corporations able to take up contracts for growing and raising vat-grown humans to populate new colonies or installations. Many vat-grown humans come from one of these projects, making up the majority of those referred to as the nonborn - those with singular names and an identifier, such as ID-John, BQ1-Bob or Thomas-582.
Restrictive laws mandate that all grown children must be cared for, educated, and held to extremely strict child safety standards. They are monitored for much of their life, and typically afforded
In Sol Space, it is illegal to own another human, and this extends to wherever they hold influence. The technology to design Vat-Growns has existed since the last 21st Century, but remains dominated by corporations.
Vat-Grown humans are humans grown through purely artificial means in growth pods. They are not grown in this manner to maturity but instead for a regular gestation period. Such humans can end up in a myriad of situations, and not all are raised by traditional families.
Grav-Adapted Humans, specifically designed to withstand pressures, are a rare sight in Sol space. Existing largely along the fringes of society, they are discriminated against commonly by other types of humans. As such, they have become a highly insular group of people, coming together to form communities in places such as the atmospheres of Gas Giants, underwater habitats (alongside Tritonans), and other locations that baseline humans would be unsuited for. Heavier and stronger than a baseline human, gravity-adapted people have thick radiation-resistant skin with a high lead content, denser bones, and recessed eyes beneath a prominent brow in order to shield them from the glare of a dangerously bright, alien sun. This comes at the cost of mobility, flexibility, and increased oxygen requirements to support their robust metabolism.
Grav Adapted humans are much like Space adapted, though they are greater in number and are found all across human space. Originally made for work in high-pressure environments. Many are close knit within their families, though fiercely independent, hardy and hard working. They are typically more common in GCC space, and make up a bulk of the Terran non-baseline populace. Despite the GCC's known anti-xeno stance, it is considered to be more tolerant of Human variants than Sol. In Sol, there is a sizeable population on Eos, a volcanic planet in the Helios system.
Grav-Adapts are the descendants of the original modified humans, as the procedures required to change a natural human is extremely traumatic and only performed in specific circumstances. The change is passed on from parent to child, except in the case of having a baseline parent, in which case the child is born a normal child. In this case, many families choose to conceive their child via vat-grown technology to ensure healthy genetics.
Space-Adapted Humans are a sub-type of Human developed as a response to significant genetic and biological differences that arise from being born in a hazardous conditions. Those that exist today are the descendent of the originally modified humans, with an unknown total population, expected to be in the millions. Modern day genetic engineering has mitigated the immediate dangers, and now most space-adapted humans live long, healthy lives. Lithe and frail, these sickly folk were engineered for work in environments that lack both light and atmosphere. As such, they're quite resistant to asphyxiation as well as toxins, but they suffer from weakened bone structure and a marked vulnerability to bright lights.
They are small in number and have suffered discrimination by baseline humans as a result of their somewhat strange modifications. The largest concentration of space-adapts is in the Sirius system, on the orbital habit, Sopdet. The rest are spread out across the cosmos, carving a home anywhere they can, both in and out of the SCG.
Tritonians were developed in the early 22nd Century as an attempt to colonise amphibious locations, such as oceans. Their heavy, seal-like bodies have sharp teeth, recessed eyes, and thick blue-grey skin with a layer of dense blubber for insulation and protection, but they find it difficult to move quickly on land due to their bulk.
Despite being the most divergent of all humans, they are found all across the galaxy. Large numbers of Tritonians have migrated to Earth, where they inhabit the now submerged cities of the past.
Tritonians are largely born naturally, as the procedures required for long term genetic modification and adaption is costly, and heavily scrutinized by governments and independent organisations due to the damage it can cause. This does not mean the procedure is impossible, and under various circumstances it is performed legally. There are rumours of unsanctioned modification, but these are dismissed as simply myth.
Boosters are a subculture of self-modifying biohackers who experiment on themselves in new and exciting ways, much to the chagrin of baseline humanity.
The self-proclaimed 'boosters' are a loosely affiliated group of self-modifying bio-tinkers, engineers and radical philosophers dedicated to expanding the definition of what it means to be human. Conservatives frown on their excessive recklessness, and most booster habitats are found on the outskirts of systems - some even linger at the edge of human space. The shared Booster genotype is extremely unstable and liable for rapid, apparently random change, but is certainly both unique and remarkable in its ability to cope with the extremes that the Universe can throw at it.
Mules are the physically deformed, psionically tainted edge-dwellers of human space, exposed to the interstellar abyss for long enough to be fundamentally changed.
There are a huge number of 'uncurated' genetic lines in human space, many of which fall under the general header of baseline humanity. One recently discovered genotype is remarkable for both being deeply feral, in the sense that it still has many of the inherited diseases and weaknesses that plagued pre-expansion humanity, and for a strange affinity for psionic operancy. The Mules, as they are called, are born on the very edges of civilization, and are physically diminutive and unimposing, with scrawny, often deformed bodies. Their physiology rejects prosthetics and synthetic organs, and their lifespans are short, but their raw psionic potential is unmatched.
