Terstener is the general term used to identify anyone from the planet Tersten, and while Terstener is used to identify one from Tersten, the planet itself have several culture and ethnic groups.

Pinasc

Pinascs are a cultural & ethnic group that developed on Tersten as a divergence from Lordanian culture. They primarily inhabit North-Central Tersten around Tersten City, Moore, and Stillwater.

Historically, the Pinascs settled on Tersten as various prison administrators and their families travelled moved to the fertile region around Harelstone Prison. They are descendent from Lordanian culture, which itself developed from a multitude of Solar cultures. Traditionally seen as Lordanian until the collapse of the Penal System, once the planet was renamed Tersten, a big Terstenification process was undertaken within Pinasc society, carving them out as a distinct cultural offshoot that integrated some parts of the prominent local prisoner culture, parts of which would also shape Nevokie culture.

Living amongst the fertile lands around the Takiwerk river, Pinascs are wealthier and healthier than their neighbors to the south. Stretching to the eastern edges of the White Ocean and Mehmet’s Cove, all the way to the mountains ridges of Peace Valley leading into the plains, they are the the second most prominent culture group on the planet. Much of the land has been urbanized and enjoys the luxuries of modern day. As a result, they are seen by much of their neighbors as ‘city-slickers’, with all the rudeness that comes with it. Pinascs are seen as culturally accepting, are typically less discriminating than average, and Pinasc society emphasises democratic and tolerant values.

With strong ties to Sol, Pinascs are often seen in the Sol Defence Force as stern and determined. Similarly Pinascs are more likely to be seen in the military or in law enforcement roles.

Pinasc is considered a majority culture around Tersten City, Moore, and Stillwater. It is a minority culture in White Ocean City, Nevada, and South Harelstone.

There exists a semi-friendly rivalry between Pinasc and Nevokie cultures.

Nevokie

Nevokies are an ethnic group originating from the harsh plains of southern and central Tersten. They are the primary culture group on the planet, stretching from Nevada in the south, Lawless in the West, and White Ocean in the east.

Historically Nevokies are comprised of a blend of every culture in the Lordanian Region as well as numerous Solar cultures. Their origins come from the untold masses of people brought to Tersten as prisoners, as well as their families, soldiers, protestors, and freedmen that settled in the planet's south, around modern day Nevada City. Most Nevokies can name at least one grandparent that was involved in the penal system.

They are a careful and suspicious people, distrusting of any authority that is not their own, coming from decades of hardy living and prison abuse. They are just as likely to shoot a stranger as shake their hands.

They are seen as traditional, but only in the sense of how they live their lives. They are equally as liberal in terms of social policies and welfare, with poor Nevokies being considered the poorest overall on Tersten.

They are a majority group all across Tersten.

Dustbowler

Dustbowler culture originates in the communities of prison life. Prior to escaping Harelstone Prison, the people that would become the dustbowlers were a sizable community that used body art such as tattoos to communicate stories and personality. Similarly developing a constructed language for communication outside of prison control, they became a distinct and divergent Tersten culture. Upon crossing the harsh badlands, many settlers were unwilling or unable to cross through the large dust storms that blow westward towards the White Ocean on its westward side. These settlers founded the city of Bibisango in the sheltered mountains, while the others pushed through, eventually arriving at an isolated harbor where the land was fertilised by nutrient rich sand, founding the city of Harmony.

Dustbowlers are considered a unique and unusual development on Tersten and thus have garnered an exotic reputation by their peers, something most Dustbowlers consider to be vaguely racist. The use of their constructed language continues today, being only spoken in the badlands and dustbowl regions of West Equatorial Tersten. Seen as an isolated community, Dustbowlers share little in common with other Tersteners.

Yukelan

Yukelan is the youngest culture on the planet, developing in the southern regions of Tersten in isolated valleys nestled between the Pearlstone and Yukela mountains. Having developed from Selenian and Cetite cultures that arrived on the post-penal planet. After the establishment of the Republic of Tersten, colonists established the city of South Harelstone which existed far enough away to develop outside of Tersten politics. As a result, it became home to a sizable academic and corporate community, typically seen as valuing brains over brawn, unlike other Terstener cultures. Similarly, they are treated with distrust by Nevokies as most Yukelans are not descendent from prisoners. This is not strictly accurate as years of intermarriage and connectivity has brought them more in-line with their Terstenian brothers.

Yukelan is a majority group in South Harelstone, and a minority in Tersten City.
