Yuklid V is the fifth planet in the Yuklid System, which lies just under 40 light years from Sol. Yuklid V is a large, humid sub-tropical planet, with icy polar caps and dense jungle between. Yuklid is home to the outer rim's largest medical facilities, and serves as home to this region of space's medical academia. It's largest city is Iyeegi, which is located in the southern hemisphere of the planet. While the majority is the planet is composed of jungle, its poles have largely been deforested to make way for urban development and farmland. The equator of the planet contains large mountain ranges, vast swamps, and large freshwater lakes.
The planet's primary export are medicines, both natural and created. It is on Yuklid that many millions of people come to seek treatment for a variety of medical conditions. Corporate-owned hospitals are common on Yuklid.
Yuklid V is a hothouse jungle world, having existed in it's current state for about 300 million years. It is much smaller than the Earth, at only 0.6 Earth masses. It is a planet of dense swampland and thick jungle, separated by bodies of water that can, around the equator, reach temperatures of 30 degrees C. Despite harsh conditions, this has not deterred hardy colonists, who have cleared roughly 5% of the planet for urban development.
The largest human settlements are built closer to the poles, where temperatures cool enough to give way to temperate, workable forests, many of which have been cut down for farmland and urban development. Only 48% of the planet has been explored, with the thick and heavy jungle proving a difficult terrain to manage.
Many large mountain ranges pierce through the jungle, including the Creiddylad Mountains in Llanbryde, and the Kortiaas Peaks in Culcheth. They often provide fertile mountain terrain, and several cities have been built in these hills.
Flora and fauna
Yuklid V's tropical environment is a paradise for countless plant-life that lives on the surface and underground. The majority of trees on the planet are thick and extremely resistant to most forms of damage, making them extremely costly to remove. The planet's soil is rich in nutrients, which has allowed for two hundred years of human cultivation. Yuklid rightly has a reputation for being a botanist's paradise. Most medicinal plants grown outside of a lab are grown freely across the planet.
Yuklid's animal life is undergoing it's equivalent late-Mesozoic period, with large reptiles and birds being found in every biome on the planet. Closer to the temperate poles however, the biosphere has seen a significant setback in the form of the introduction of non-native animal life, typically brought by human settlers.
The planet is hot all year round, with wet seasons every eight Earth months. While the planet's atmosphere is still slowly heating, the planet is expected to undergo a natural glacial cycle within the next hundred thousand years. Scientists predict that Yuklid may one day become extremely Earth-like.
Yuklid V was colonised in the mid-to-late 22nd century, being selected initially for it's habitable conditions by seeder ships from Sol along with several other planets in a star cluster near the edge of Sol Space. Little terraforming was needed, with temperate forests burned away with controlled fires. They found the land in this region accommodating and hospitable. In just under 50 years, the planet already had sizeable colonies across it's polar regions. As the settlers explored their world, they discovered the harsh and thick jungles were the perfect conditions for botanical work. This led to a transition from uninteresting public colony towards a significant private sector. By this time, Yuklid had united into a constitutional republic centered around its capital, Iyeegi, enjoying peace and prosperity in its early years, leading it to become a founding member of a unified republic state known as the 'Lordanian Republic', named for the capital planet Lordania.
Sometime after the founding of the republic, a series of civil protests and petitions regarding the independence of planetary states and the people's rights to decide who their allies are, went ignored by the republic, despite member state protests. This led to a series of strikes and riots that swept across the interplanetary region, starting with the Iyeegi riots and ending with the widespread crackdown and arrest of violent protesters. The overwhelming of Yuklid's relatively small police force led to the creation of the penal colony of Pinascimate, modern day Tersten. Many Yuklidians were sent to the planet for the thirty year period of penal punishment.
The Formation of the People's Republic of Lordania did not effect Yuklid, as its relative closeness to major systems, and its medicinal industry granted the system a great deal of protection and influence. Much of Yuklid's modern day infrastructure was developed around this time. The cities of Acacara and Llanbryde were developed in this period.
Following the internal collapse of the PRL, its loyalty towards the Government earned it the ire of the various factions in play after the collapse of centralised government. Around this time, the Spiritualists, a disorganised group of various theologians, doctors, philosophers, and politicians, petitioned the Yuklid emergency government to refuse any engagements with enemy forces. Placed under military blockade, Yuklid remained resistant to outside forces by engaging in a series of non-violent actions, ensuring that any acts of hostilities would not come from them. A dependency on importation meant that Yuklid suffered heavily under the blockade, being forced to make concessions and unfavourable deals to remain fed. To this end, Yuklid directly petitioned to Sol Central for refuge and aid, leading to the larger involvement of the SCG, and to the eventual creation of the Second Lordanian Republic, that would represent Yuklid and other planets within the Interstellar Assembly. In 2284, Yuklid was chosen by Sol Central to be the meeting point of the First Senate of the Second Lordanian Republic. Several years later, Yuklid and the various members of the SLR returned the favour by participating in the Gaia Conflict.
By the modern day Yuklid has reached a population of twenty-five million. The Senate has not counted for such a rapid population growth such few years, leading to the expansion of the Yuklid Intercontinental Highway, and a series of jungle containment acts. The pharmaceutical industries have been funding various expansions of their facilities on the planet, owing to favourable SCG trading conditions around the turn of the century.
Yuklid's economy is predominantly based around its healthcare system. The planet's ability to grow nearly any kind of terrestrial plant has allowed a considerable cultivation industry to grow around the planet's southern lakes. Large quantities of medicines in Sol space can place their origins to Yuklid. In addition, multitudes of companies maintain hospitals and treatment centers on the planet. The largest of this being Vey-Med Operational Headquarters, one of the corporation's largest assets.
As much of Yuklid is uncolonized jungle, the majority of civilization is located around the poles. The capital city, Iyeegi, is located in the southern region of the planet, where much of the Jungle has been cut away for urban development.
Iyeegi is a large city in the southern hemisphere, in a temperate region of the planet that has allowed for deforestation. As capital of Yuklid, Iyeegi is home to the SCG's representation on the planet. The city is located on the banks of the Bei River, allowing it to be reached by boat from most major inland bodies of water.
Jeonbaek is the largest city in the northern hemisphere, and also the closest city to the north pole. Built on a peninsula on the north coast of the Arctic Sea. Much of this region is dry savanna, lacking in thick jungle and shielded by a mountain range running down towards Asanobe. Further down, the Jingzhou canal connects the Arctic Sea to the Colquibuco Ocean in north-central Yuklid.
Acacara is a major city on Yuklid. It's favourable position on the edge of the Colquibuco Ocean allows it to utilize hydroelectric power generated via the Duval Canal. Acacara is home to a large number of medical resorts, catering to private patients recovering in luxury. This provides the region with a sizable income, contributing largely to Yuklid’s economy.
Culcheth is a large settlement in the southern hemisphere. It is located in deforested farmland, and the closest city to the south pole. It is home to the Vey-Med Operational Headquarters, with the company operating many hospitals in the outer regions of the SCG from this facility. The largest mountain on Yuklid, Mt. Saath, is located north of Culcheth and is a popular tourist attraction.
Central Yuklid is a large, and mostly inhospitable jungle. Key settlements are built along traversable rivers and mountain ranges. Vast numbers of towns simply go unknown due to their restrictiveness and positioning. This is not to say the entire region is unexplored, as five intercontinental highways connect the key cities of Llanbryde, Délite, and Asanobe.
Llanbryde is a large city in central Yuklid. Colonised in the early 23rd century, it swiftly grew into a large city, extending its political reach across the entire region. The larger state extends across the mountainous plateau between three of Yuklid's great lakes, and is seen as the home of Spiritualism.
Délite is a large city built in the marshlands along the Caltacce River, leading up to the Medio Delta. Originally established as an outpost and research hub, the settlement grew swiftly after the medicinal benefits of the jungle were discovered. The city is elevated from the ground and often becomes an island during flooding events. It has often been described as the tropical Venice. Deep in the heart of the jungles, it is home to the Expeditionary Corp Exoplanet Training Centre, or the ETETC.
Asanobe is a large city built in the Medio Ocean, the largest freshwater body on Yuklid. It has grown to spread across several islands. Asanobe is host to Yuklid's only navy, operating as coast guard through the unexplored jungles. Despite the planet's reputation as a peaceful world, the coast guard often come to blows with smugglers and criminal influences away from civilization.
Culture and Religion
Llanbrydian, Asani, and Délitites are the most prominent cultures in Central Yuklid. They also make up the largest concentration of Spiritualists on the planet.
- The Llanbrydians are descended from celtic settlers following unfavourable conditions on Earth. They took with them their language and culture, becoming a modern state in its own right. They make up the State of Celtica, one territory of the larger Republic of Yuklid.
- The Asani are largely concentrated in cities along the great Medio Ocean, the largest freshwater body on Yuklid. They are known for their naval pride and strong artistic output. Connected by a series of canals and waterways to the capital Iyeegi, these cultures developed around trading cities established in places of strategic interest.
- The Délitetes mostly inhabit low lying flatlands and swamps close to the river banks. They are hardy, and resistant to the unfriendly conditions of the jungle. Their isolation, with most towns accessible only by boat, has led to an insular and suspicious culture developing in this area.
The Iyee, Jeonbaeki, Culcether, and Acacaran are known as the Cosmopolitans, having developed in the largely urban build-up around the temperate polar caps. The people live in large, well-developed and well-connected areas and are often seen off-world.
- The Iyee and Culcether are largely metropolitan, based around the capital city of Iyeegi and surrounding areas. They are the most diverse of all Yuklidians. They are also the most casual, just happy to get through the day.
- The Acara are the most wealthy of all Yuklidians, being capable medical professionals. They are seen all across Sol space in various medical institutions. While not as notable as their Asani cousins, the Acara have a maritime tradition in the form of small scale fishing.
- Jeonbaeki live at the northern poles of the planet. They are considered the most industrious, as the savannah regions around the city of Jeonbaek is a hardy place to live. Despite this, they are welcoming, and their cities boast the latest 24th century technology.
Yuklid Spiritualism is a faith developed on the planet in response to civil unrest and political upheaval. Founded 75 years ago, the church is based out of Llanbryde and arbitrated by the Arweinydd, a council of theologians, doctors, philosophers, and politicians that oversees the teachings of the faith. They emphasise a 'one-ness' in nature, and advocate for non-violence. They believe that mankind has the duty to help others as part of the divine nature. It is an ethnoreligion, best described as a mixture of the hippocratic oath and early christian healers.
They are however very adept at political manoeuvres, and have seen successes in Yuklid politics. A spiritualist political party helped Yuklid transition into the SCG, and they are often seen in medical or other non-combat roles onboard vessels.
Laws and Government
The Republic of Yuklid is a constitutional one-world republic that represents the planet within the Sol Central Government. The Republic is based out of Iyeegi, and it's current President is Yafeu Bachman, elected in 2306 and who represents the Yuklid Democratic Party. Yuklid is a founding planet of the Second Lordanian Republic, a larger superstate that constitutes five other nearby planets, and serves as a satellite state for the larger Sol Central Government.
Thanks to Sol investment, Yuklid has seen its prosperity increase over recent years. In return, Yuklid has become a supporter of the Government, frequently welcoming new immigrants and visitors to the planet.
Yuklid contributes very little to the overall military budget of the Defence Forces. Instead, it pays its dues through medical care for all Defence Forces personnel, EC operations and training, and staffing of Sol vessels.
