|Second Republic of Lordania|
|Alternative names||White Lordania|
|Government Type||Autocratic Republic|
|Head of Government||William M. Harrow|
The Second Republic of Lordania (SRL), is an autonomous state within the Sol Central Government. It lies in a cluster of space containing a roughly ten stars known locally as the Lordanian Cluster. It's capital is Lordania, located at the heart of the cluster. It borders the Confederate Systems of Lordania, which is an independent confederation that opposes the SCL.
Following the collapse of the People's Republic of Lordania in 2280, which was a repressive regime that controlled the unified area, the region entered a period of Interregnum in which it succumbed to internal strife and outside manipulations. Most of the planets, including Tersten, Cinu, and Kingston experienced a period of independence and growth, and advocated against a unified government. This led to civil unrest on Lordania and Yuklid, which attracted both the aid and attention of the SCG. Following a period of negotiations, a new government was established with the backing and help from the SCG. In exchange for economic investment, the government would submit to Sol's laws and freedoms. What to many was seen as a heroic integration, others saw as a villainous annexation, which the Confederate Systems were founded to protest against. The Second Lordanian Republic contains 5 member states, with each planet electing three representatives from differing political parties to represent their issues at the Senate of Lordania.
What the Republic lacks in mineral resources, it makes up for in cultural and technological output, containing both Kingston and Lorriman. It's current Supreme Chancellor is William M. Harrow, who has served since 2300, following the death of the previous (and first) chancellor Diana Ndaiye. It is an Autocratic Republic, with elected senators related to matters of the people, and a select few self appointed Chancellors regarding matters of the State. This has drawn much criticism, however the Government has shown little desire to change, largely owing to the decentralised nature of the Republic, the Chancellery is largely seen by most Lordanians as a checks and balance system against instability. Despite this, the Second Republic is a formal member of Sol Central Government, and the two enjoy a warm and open relationship.
The Second Lordanian Republic is an autocratic federal republic within the Sol Central Government. While its member states retain jurisdiction over themselves, the seat of power, the Chancellery, is (excluding 5 members) appointed from within themselves.
Each of the five member states elect six representatives to convene at the Senate to address planetary matters. The 30 Representatives make up different parties and beliefs, allowing for matters to be properly debated. However, any matters pertaining to multi-planetary and external affairs are made to pass through the Chancellery for further debate.
The Chancellery is the upper house of the Second Lordanian Republic, comprised of eight hereditary Chancellors, picked by other chancellors from a "selection of people with complementary moral character". This position is consider one of the most powerful in the Republic, and one of the most elite. From each of the member states of the Republic, three individuals are selected from each planet to become its Representative. While they convene in the Chancellery, they are appointed by the planet's government, and so spend much of their time on their respective planet.
At the head of the Chancellery is the Supreme Chancellor, sitting as Head of Government. Despite its impressions, the Supreme Chancellor does not wield executive power, but rather as the final word of the Chancellery. This position is appointed from within the Chancellery. Currently, William Harrow has been Supreme Chancellor for fifteen years, having been appointed the position following the death of Diana Ndiaye, the previous Supreme Chancellor.
Yuklid is a binary star system in the Inner Rim. It has five planets, of which only Yuklid V is occupied.
Lucinaer is a binary star system in the Mid Rim. It's only occupied planet is Cinu, a desert planet with similar conditions as of Earth's Middle East. It's capital is Al-Mular, and it served as a primary destination for many Arabic Colonists from Sol.
Gessshire is a single star system located in the Mid Rim. Gessshire is a B-Type star system, and it's occupied planet, Lorriman, is a frozen arctic world. Because of it's size and location, Lorriman has been home to the Lordanian Institute of Science for over fifty years, and serves as the primary base of operations for any research efforts in the Cluster.
Gavil is a G-Type Main Sequence Star located in the Outer Rim. It's only occupied planet is Tersten. Tersten is a plains-like planet, with high mountain ranges and vast expanses. It's population lives mostly in large cities, with the rest dispersed around the vast countryside. Tersten has recently seen an expansion of the Sol Central Government's influence, as well as a military expansion by the Third Fleet in response to the Confederate build-up in nearby Denebola.
The Republic is currently experiencing what economists call it's "Restructuring Era". Following the collapse of the PRL and the ensuing interregnum, much of its income has been spent on demilitarisation and suppressing fascist supporters during the Republics early years. It is only in the years post-Gaia that the Republic has been able to rebuild its interstellar economy. The Republic is fueled by its cultural output in the form of Kingston, Lordania, and Yuklid. It is known to most people within the SCG as the Lordanian Cultural Revolution, in which Lordania went from being militarised isolationist xenophobes to cultured and welcoming people producing an extraordinary amount of entertainment and arts in under two decades. Despite Tersten being the largest producer of food for the outer rim, and Kingston being a major tourist destination, Lordania produces more cultural capital than the every other planet in the region's combined economic output.
fueled by its Cultural output, which generates as much income as it's food and mineral production combined.
Much of the region's food is produced on Tersten. Agreements with Sol allow Lordania access to it's own production, with excess exported to Sol.
Technological output on Lorriman is mostly independent of the Republic, allowing scientific access to multiple corporations and governments.
For roughly 90 years, the region was governed by the independent Lordanian Republic. Centered on the capital world of Lordania, the Republic was ruled by the Lordanian Senate, which in turn was led by an elected Consul. However, as the Republic grew, the government became bloated and corrupt. The Senate was primarily comprised of corrupt politicians who focused on filling their own pockets, meaning that the Senate was unable to deal effectively with disputes that arose between the member worlds of the Republic. With growing protest from the planets over one-sided trade deals and decades of economic exploitation, terrorist attacks became common, both by desperate individuals, and by those who had something to gain from the matter. By 2250, this had become stagnancy, and political turmoil caused the collapse of the Republic, and the formation of an authoritarian dictatorship.
The People's Republic of Lordania, led by a group known as the Unitarians (From Lordanian Unity, the ruling party) governed from 2260 to 2280. During this period, the government was directly ruled by Consul Leonard Percy and his cabal. This period led to a massive militarisation and infrastructural improvement. Scholars continue to debate about the effects of the PRL. While most certainly a fascist state, it was not expansionist, and was until its later years, tolerant of beliefs and cultures (providing they considered themselves 'Lordanian Above All'.) The PRL inherited the region at its economically worst, and thus had the support of the people to bring retribution against those that were perceived to have caused it. At first this was politicians and generals, but this eventually became a targetted assault against ethnically non-Lordanians. Across the region, individual rights were curtailed and many people were displaced, exiled, or killed. Economic reforms did help to bring the economy out of its slump, but with most of it being spent on militrification and infrastructural works, few people saw this time as an economically better than the last. By 2274, most people within the cluster had turned against Unitarian control.
Following large scale rioting on Tersten, Cinu, and Nouveaulyon, the PRL suffered significant setback after bombings and assassinations splintered the internal political scale. A group of high ranking individuals within the PRL, known as the Vidento Eight, staged a coup in 2278, assisted by loyalist bands of fighters that had come under the banner of The Brotherhood, which had engaged in skirmish with the Government for several years.
In 2279 a lone Resistance cruiser enters Lordanian space while the PRL fleet was distracted. Using information given to them by the Vindeto, it bypassed the automated security and, aiming itself at the Lordanian Senate, it set itself on a collision course. The Senate was, naturally, completely destroyed, along with several city blocks. It is the largest and most devastating attack of it's kind, with an estimated 300,000 dead, primarily military and political figures. The Consul himself is among the dead. City blocks on the other side of the planet report earthquake damage. Estimated total cost of rebuilding reached over one trillion Thaler. With the head of the People's Republic completely decimated, it's influence across the region would completely collapse overnight. Despite heavy censorship, news of the event travelled across the galaxy. Soon after the Lordanian Cluster reestablished full communication with Sol, ending a 30 year information blockade.
With much of the Vindeto dead, power in the Empire passed to military command, which plunged the Empire into a period of Interregnum. While power in the central system rapidly decided, power to individual systems rose. The military arm of the Resistance joined forces with a growing democratic movement to become the Democratic League, which promoted individual colonial power through a willing union of states, rather than the previous forced admission. This led to conflict on Yuklid and Lordania, who petitioned the global stage for assistance. To this end, Sol Central Government advocated the creation of a new Republic, which was proposed in the First Proclamation of Lordania in 2284. This allowed the Senate to rebuild, and granted greater autonomy to systems that rejoined the Republic. This was rejected by three prominent systems, Tersten, Cinu, and Tyannani. In response, Tyannani declared the Tyannani Convention in 2285, in which the Democratic League opposed another corrupt Lordanian Republic, and instead proposed a state that encouraged Laissez-faire system, rather than a controlled market that the Republic desired.
The intense negotiations that followed in the Second Lordanian Convention (2286) and the Sirius Convention (2287) ended in a complete breakdown of relationships, with Cinu and Tersten supporting the Republic, and Tyannani supporting the creation of a new state.
In 2287, with support of Sol, the Second Lordanian Republic was founded on the planet Yuklid, overseen by members of SolGov. Its first act was to sign the Sol Charter on behalf of all planets, even those that had not joined the Second Lordanian Republic at this time. This started the countdown for the Second Lordanian Republic to formally join the Senate, on the condition that their senators be aligned to no planet specifically. The remaining Vindeto pledged their support to the SCG and formed the Chancellory of Lordania to serve the people of the Republic. It ensures that the people can govern their lands, and that matters of the State are handled efficiently and properly. Following this, it pardoned the thousands of political conscripts and freedom fighters. A mass campaign of demilitarification occured, and although much has been removed, it is still common to find the remains of bunkers and checkpoints buried in the dirt.
In 2288, following widespread protest amongst the Democratic League in failure to protest the SCG's apparent annexation of the region, the Confederate Systems of Lordania was founded in protest. The Confederate held significant control over non-aligned systems and radically opposed the still restricted markets of the Republic. These planets had signed the Sol Charter without any say in it, which was a major barrier in negotiation talks between the states.
The Republic as required by Sol law, maintains its own Defence Force, though this is mostly staffed by reservists and administrators who handle much of the region's policing, gateway maintenance, and any other issues. It is heavily tied with the Third Fleet, who maintain a shipyard in orbit around Tersten. The Defence Fleet was formally integrated into the Third Fleet during much of the Gaia Conflict. As such, it is the only PDF that not only survived the Gaia Conflict, but many Lordanians participated in the siege of Altair and Galilee.
While the Republic and the Confederate maintain a truce, this is far from secure. They are not at war, but due to the Confederate's "forced" signing of the Charter and their subsequent refusal to follow through with it, the Sol Central Government has placed a blockade on the region that has lasted since 2290. This blockade was, at first, largely inefficient, and during the Gaia War, non-existant. Tensions flared after Confederate warships were spotted near the border, but the engagement remained cold until the return of the Third Fleet in 2296 following the end of the Gaia War. The blockade was maintained following this, where it continues into the modern day of 2307.
