Lordania is an occupied world with large scale infrastructural works. Mass expansion has led large parts of the planet to become interconnected suburbs between large metropolitan areas. It is well on its way to becoming an Ecumonopolis, though large parts of the planet have been declared nature reserves and remain undeveloped. Lordania is located just under 40 light years from Sol. It is the most populous planet in the system, with it's terrestrial neighbor Kingston, second in terms of population, trailing several million behind. Lordania is located in, and gives its name to the 'Lordanian Cluster', a small grouping of ten occupied stars within close proximity of one-another.
Colonised in the late 22nd century, Lordania is the oldest and most powerful planet in the region. An independent state for much of its history, it became a territory of SCG in 2286.
The planet has no capital city. Previously, the city of New Ares, served as home to much of the state's administration, until the destruction of its senate in 2279. Following the arrival of Sol Central Government, the city of Waterpool has become the de facto administration hub on the planet.
The United Metropolises of Lordania and Kingston is a member of the Second Lordanian Republic, a region of space under Sol Central Government control. Lordania's relations with Sol are warm despite political pressures from many angles both internally and externally. Lordania's economy is built on the backs of Corporations and Entertainment. It is a major centre of the galactic entertainment industry. It is also driven by trading, finance, aerospace, fashion, travel and tourism. More than 30 languages are spoken on Lordania, and many immigrants are accepted as part of a de-unification process, reversing the effects of populist authoritarian government that took power between 2245-2280. As of 2308, Lordania's population is still widely skewed compared to other planets in the region.
Despite it's population density, Lordania is actually one of the smallest colonised planets in Sol, coming to 0.16 the mass of Earth. It has a total circumference of 36845km2, making it slightly smaller than the Sol planet Venus.
The Lordanian Metropolis is comprised of sixteen individual metropolitan areas that in the early 26th century grew to comprise the entirety of the planet. At only 0.16th the size of Earth, the planet is small and atmospherically dense. Its gravity is half that of Earth's, slighly denser than Mars. Atmospheric manipulation has allowed for the construction of large scale skyscrapers and towers across the planet. Large artificial dams have changed the courses of rivers to flow into lakes in which the cities have been constructed around. Cities have been designed to take advantage of weather, and much of the planet is either solar, wind, or hydroelectric powered. Despite the urban expansion, large parts of the planet have been allocated as nature reserves, and a mutual interest in keeping Lordania great have ensured that city parks continue to get the funding they need. The planet has been breathable for over 100 years.
Lordania has seven large metropolitan areas, with the largest urban build-up being around the Iodas Ocean, a large body of water that runs through much of the planet's southern hemisphere.
The largest and most prosperous city states, it is joint with Quhon as being the earliest settlement on the planet. The de facto capital of the planet, it was previously home to the Lordanian Senate until its destruction along with a large part of the city. Today it is the home of Lordanian Entertainment and Commerce. New Aresians are a cultural mix of traditional Aresians, Gideon, Selenian, Chinese, American, English, and various other minority cultures. They see themselves as a proud, dutiful people with an emphasis on wealth and social status.
The Xutong Metropolitan Region is located south of New Ares, at the base of the Běijí Mountains that make up the south polar region. It hosts a large number of Lordania's urban vertical farms, as well as home to the Xīngjì Dàshà centre, where the Reserve Bank of Sol has their regional headquarters. Xutons are descendent from Lunar Chinese, Martian Ascraesen, and numerous Earth-based cultures. Like their Aresian neighbors, they value wealth and duty.
Gabokane is a metropolitan region to the north-east of New Ares. Gabokane developed as a suburb of New Ares until it was chosen as location for the NanoTrasen Regional Headquarters, spurring more Transtellar Corporations to choose the region as location of their facilities. As a result, it has become the planet's 'silicon city', a leading high tech industrial centre. Gabokaners trace their origins to the industrial powerhouse of Central Africa, the original builders of Earth's space elevator and survivors of the cataclysm of the 21st century. Lorriman was in-part colonised by Gabokaner Lordanians. They value innovation and are adaptive to modern technology.
A large region between Gabokane and New Ares was destroyed after the destruction of the Senate, resulting in the largest loss of life in Lordanian history, several billion in repair costs, and the complete absorption of Lordania into the Sol Central Government. Much of the area has been slowly rebuilt, with the senate ruins turned into a large monument.
Mallane is a metropolitan region to the north of Waterpool and is located in the fertile Suebi plains. Originally developed as an urban retreat for the rich, after the destruction of the Senate, Mallane became a home for many refugees and dissenters against the People's Republic of Lordania. It was the only region to not only survive the ensuing Interregnum, but thrive. Today, Mallane is a cultural and political hub, where young Lordanians discuss neo-socialism in a coffee shop by the river. It is home to numerous galleries, museums, and parks. Much of this has been funded by various Lordanian Corportations such as Hoch-Baton, Gucci-Armani, Lovettica Industries, and Fairchild-Burbank. Mallane is a cultural hotspot, with many different interplanetary cultures settling in the region, arguably the most tolerant part of the planet. Mallane similarly has a large Latin American and South American population, largely centered around the Bolīvar District and New Columbia.
Waterpool is the second largest Metropolitan Region on Lordania. Settled on the north coast of the Musoke Sea, it was isolated from the ocean by large ice sheets until the construction of the 'God Canal', a mega-engineering project that connected the two bodies of water underneath a mountain. It was made the home of the Lordanian government after the destruction of the Senate in New Ares. It was in Waterpool that the Second Lordanian Republic was made a formal member of the Sol Central Government, where it established much of its political infrastructure. It is home to the Marcus Garvey Building, where the Second Lordanian Republic convenes. Waterpool is also home to the Sol Garrison, where much of Sol's activities within the SCL takes place. Waterpudlians are a cultural mix of Martian, Spacer, and Earth cultures. They are closely related to Kingstonian cultures.
Located to the west of New Ares and along Lordan Sea, Saladone is an urban industrial centre, mining the Friday Mountain to the west. It serves as the headquarters of the Lordanian Terraforming Initiative. With its relative isolation, Saladone was heavily reinforced by the People's Republic of Lordania, becoming for a brief time, the biggest producer of weapons and ammunition in the cluster. While it has since lost this title to Indus, it remains a point of pride for Lordanian Arms Manufacturers. Saladonians can trace their ethnicity to Slavic and Europeans, retaining some elements of these cultures in the face of immigration, emigration, and cultural homogenisation. A sizable populace of Orthodox followers still reside in the city. Saladonians value tradition, but are still considered by-and-large the nicer groups of Lordanians. Similarly after the colonisation of Tersten, Saladonian culture developed with others to become modern day Dustbowlers.
Quhon is one of the oldest metropolitan regions on Lordania. Founded around the same time as New Ares, Quhon is located on the far west coast of the Iodas Ocean, built around the Huángjīn Bay. It is a vital transportation hub between Waterpool and Saladone. As Lordania's southernmost region, it is often seen as a cold, isolated place. With the construction of the Huángjīn Bridge and Yang Liwei Spaceport, Quhon has done much to dispel this myth. The Quhonese are a mix of Central Asian, South Asian, American, and East African Earthling cultures, and Tharseese and Charusian cultures.
Most land outside the metropolitan regions has been handed over to the Lordanian National Park Administration, an interplanetary body responsible for the environmental protection and regulation of member states of the SLR. The LNPA helps ensure the careful terraforming process, through careful tree planting, controlled fires, and 24th century technology designed to divert rivers and play God.
Much of these regions have been developed to encourage cooperation with planetary corporations and residents. As a result, with a significant financial contribution, many of the mega-rich of the SCG own vast eco-friendly and renewable estates and residences in the isolated parks.
The Lordanian culture is widely divided between Upper Lordanians and Lower Lordanians. Lordanian is the primary culture of the planet Lordania, and considered the godmother of most planetary cultures within the cluster.
Historically, Lordanian developed from a mixture of European, Asian, African cultures and states that were able to launch vessels capable of reaching the planet. While cities such as Xutong and Mallane developed largely around several prominent cultures, cities such as New Ares developed as a gradual homogenisation.
However, this cultural mix was not always peaceful. Ancient ethnic disputes occasionally rose up between the different groups, gradually creating a wedge between societies. The political actions of the late 2290s formalised the distinction between the working class, primarily a large cultural mix of many ethnicities, and the neo-aristocracy, which remained primarily distinct depending on city state. This developed into 'Upper Lordanian' and 'Lower Lordanian' around the start of the 23rd century, the first formal acknowledgment that it had become a distinct culture group.
Beginning in the 2250s, a constant stream of emigration led to the establishment of the predominantly Lower Lordanian Kingston, where it became a distinct culture, Kingstonian in the late 23rd century. Nowadays the term Lower Lordanian has fallen into disuse, becoming a slur used by city-dwellers to refer to anyone "below the gilded skyscrapers".
From it's establishment until the late 23rd Century, the traditional Lordanian economy was built around the luxury and consumer goods production. Construction of it's spaceport started early in the planet's development, allowing to fully exploit interstellar trade. It also serves as the traditional home of the Lordanian Finance sector. Part of Lordania's economy was developed around it's military and political tradition. Parts of the planet have been converted into offices and training fields for various interplanetary military bodies.
Large parts of the planet's resources were owned by wealthy individuals and Lordanian corporations that led to a wide wealth gap. The aristocratic nature of the Republic only served to increase this divide between Rich and Poor. Eventually, this led to a social change and planetary migration in the early 23rd century. The leadership of the country, and the division of its labour soon became influenced by political dynasties from wealth corporations. Lordanian Senators such as Jorge Hoch-Flagbatton III and John Lovettica IX came from these political dynasties and help establish the Lordanian Republic as a greater whole. The planet itself grew wealthy on the backs of others, manipulating the Lordanian Republic to serve its own interests.
The Economic Collapse of 2230 in the region only served to infuriate the population more, leading to the election of a fascist regime. Under the regime, the economy was entirely regulated and controlled, with the planet continuing its exploit its neighbours.
A large part of the planet's political hub was destroyed in 2278 when a revolution against the ruling People's Republic led to the destruction of the Senate Building, and several city blocks. This in turn led to harsh economic downturn during the period of Interregnum (2280-2286). In exchange for various political ties and requirements, Sol Central Government granted financial investment to redevelop and rebuild the planet. It is now part of the larger Sol Economy, which has led to varying success across the region.
As of 2306, that investment has seen a transition from a very closed, isolationist Lordania, into one of the major players in the entertainment world. The New Ares Metroplex is the entertainment, fashion and commercial centre of Lordania. Headquarters of a number of institutions such as the Lordanian Stock Exchange, Reserve Bank of Sol, Interplanetary Media Centre. Numerous TSCs and regional companies such as NanoTrasen, SAARE, Lovettica Industries, Hephaestus Industries, and Gilthari Exports are located on the planet.
Law and Government
Lordania is a federal, bureaucratic autocracy. There exists no formal head of state, and the government is overseen directly by the Second Lordanian Republic. While mostly democratic, the requirements to participate in formal office are often too expensive for lower class participation, leading to a large political divide. Every 8 years a vote is called to elect a new State Speaker, or to extend the term of the previous one.
Second Lordanian Republic
The Second Lordanian Republic is an executive government that oversees planetary government of all six member states. Though technically an independent state, it is part of the Sol Central Government. Through the SLR, each member state provides its share to the SCG.
It is headquartered in the Marcus Garvey Building, located in the metropolitan region of Waterpool. The new Senate building was rebuilt into a memorial in 2300 after the previous building, and much of the surrounding city was destroyed by a cruiser commanded by The Brotherhood, a group of rebellious military and political leaders opposed to the People's Republic of Lordania, who would eventually form the Confederate Systems of Lordania. Much of the rebuilding process was financed by Sol, leading to heavy debts, many of which have only recently been repaid.
Lordania contributes a large part of its military economy on contributing to the Sol Defence Forces. The Sol Garrison on Lordania serves as headquarters for all operations in the region, and most Lordanian who enlist serve in Officer positions.
Lordania and Kingston maintain a joint defence force, staffed by reservists and volunteers to protect their stellar space.
Lordania was founded by a large multi-ethnic collective from Sol that settled in the regions of Quhon and New Ares. Built on the backs of a large work force, comprised of both vat-grown workers, robots, and a growing native population, the planet developed rapidly. While atmospheric satellites handled much of the initial terraforming of the planet, large scale infrastructural works allowed the people to manipulate their planet on a much larger scale. Dams created artificial lakes, which were directly created to take advantage of the weather. Spending and gaining in abundance, over thirty years the planet grew wide and tall.
However, this acquisition of wealth was not truly proportional. While Lordanian classism had yet to truly manifest, it's seeds were sown by the fact that much of planet's mineral and food wealth began to be monopolised by a large group of companies and people. These people became the Upper Lordanians, who inhabited the tall, glistening towers closer to the lakes. Their wealth allowed them to directly fund the government's growth, gaining greater representation on the political stage. Whereas much of the Lordanian workforce found themselves unable to afford themselves the representation.
By 2205, it had become very clear that the Colony of Lordania had reached a level of development that meant a provisional government was no longer enough to manage the expanding regions. Funding for the construction of a senate building, based on traditional republican ideals, was seen as a noble and righteous thing, and inspired by the governments of Mars and Earth that they had left. While the government was elected, and all Lordanians were extended the right to vote, the luxury of an office was only granted to those who had contributed to the state, and thus, they created an aristocratic republic in which only the powerful could run for office.
The Lordanian Republic as it was known, was the first non-emergency government founded in the Lordanian Region (and in the process naming the region after itself). While other colonies had developed, none had expanded as fast as Lordania. The foundation of the Republic was therefore an extremely important one, with many other colonies following in Lordania's wake.
Meanwhile, further inland on the planet, the large working class population found itself in a difficult position. General overcrowding of Lordania, and rising housing prices across the planet led a large chunk of this population to migrate to another planet in the Lordanian system known as Kingston. This balance and dependence on Kingstonian Workers, and Lordanian Exports, kept the two planets in economic union, which soon extended to all settled planets in the region, thus forming the First Lordanian Republic.
A series of economic downturns, bad political manuevers, and growing inequality led to the resignation of many prominent Lordanian senators such as Zachariah Khan, Richard Lovettica, and Ali Yildirim. This crisis was only made worse following civil unrest, alievated slightly by the creation of the penal colony of Tersten. Following the collapse of the Cinuan Government, widespread anarchist uprisings on Noveaulyon, and growing nationalism, the election of the Lordanian Unity party led to the formation of a nationalist, authoritarian government.
The Banality of Evil
The People's Republic of Lordania reinforced the planet, reinvigorating its economy from luxury goods to full-scale military production. Headquartered in the New Ares Senate, from here the Consul and his cabinet planned and executed the oppression of millions of people. Ethnic Martians and Earthlings were blamed for their problems, claiming a jealousy of Lordanian culture. While many Lordanians disagreed with the state, speaking out often led to the confiscation of property and arrest. This property was distributed to directly benefited Upper Lordanians loyal to the state.
Growing insurrection constantly plagued the PLR, ironically accomplishing their goal of uniting the Lordanian people. The deaths or desertion of admirals and commanders left the PRL in a militarily weak position, which the various revolutionary factions took advantage of. In 2279, a faction comprised of former political and military leaders called The Brotherhood launched a craft into the Senate, killing the Consul and his cabinet, destroying the building and several city blocks, displacing almost ten-thousand people, and completely devastation the PRL, which collapsed a year later leading to a period of Interregnum across the cluster.
Lordania suffered heavily from this action, with its surviving political figures relocation to Waterpool and enforcing martial law. Very few military figures follow this order, instead opting to side with the dissenters. Political leaders in Mallane reveal the existence of an anti-PRL government capable of taking Lordania. What follows is several months of occasional fighting, and the movement of rebellious people's to Mallane.
With Yuklid under military blockade by the Brotherhood, and under fear of being targeted by criminal tribunals, the PRL on Lordania surrenders to the Mallane Government, who appeals to Sol Central Government for help.
Sol Central Government, having recently lost its Gilgameshian holdings, invests in the region, allowing politically capable individuals the rights to form a Government, in exchange, they demand full access to the region and compliance with Sol law and cooperation with their forces. Several of these individuals had ties to the PRL, despite their pardoning by Mallane. In return, the Brotherhood forms an opposing Democratic League of Tyannani and Noveaulyon. Several years of back and forth political manuevring leads to the formation of the Sol-backed Second Lordanian Republic, and the opposing Confederate Systems of Lordania. The SCL was now made up of Lordania, Kingston, Yuklid, Cinu, Lorriman, and Tersten.
The first Supreme Chancellor of the SCL was Diana Ndiaye, an Afro-Arabic Kingstonian who served as Kingston Economic Secretary under the PRL. She governed from 2287 to her death, when current Supreme Chancellor William Harrow was elected.
Between 2287 and 2295, Lordania went through a period of De-Fascistification, restructuring its military economy into a cultural and entertainment-driven one. Ties with Kingston were further cemented with the creation of the United Metropolises of Lordania and Kingston in 2293.
While critics remain outspoken against the Republic's authoritarian government, it has proven itself to be an efficient and mostly benevolent government with no hostile intentions. As a member of the Sol Government, it has enjoyed numerous privileges and benefits, something it does not intend to throw away.
